Opportunities

Don't be so high and mighty that you don't take advantage of the humble opportunities that are granted to you. There were things that i didn't do that I could have that would have made my life better. Life is very difficult and in order to thrive with this difficult life if an opportunity is presented to you, you shouldn't be so arrogant that you dismiss it. And it's easy to be arrogant, especially as a teenager because you think 'well I'm smarter than everybody else' It's like, actually, no. If you're sixteen and your life isn't so happy, look around and see if there are opportunities that people are granting you. That's some advice that Jordan Peterson, a Canadian psychologist who focuses on improvement of personality and performance, would give his 16 year old self. I think he made a great point. You are responsible for your own happiness, and in order to be happy, you need to find out who you are, where your potential lies, you need...

the Wonder of Life

One trait that all life forms have in common is that when an individual has grown up, it has the ability to create offspring. Something that is pretty much unique to life. No-one ever saw a rock grow, or a piece of plastic reproduce. Life, though, does exactly that.    Our ability to GIVE life is astonishingly beautiful. They say that you don‘t know what you got until you lose it. People who have lost the ability to reproduce often confirm that theory. They would have loved to take care of a child of their own, with their face and their characteristics, but unfortunately this gift is denied them. That is exactly what life is: it is a gift. Like with any gift, you yourself, who receives it, is not responsible for its existence. None of us asked to be born and yet, we were born. It can be difficult, in fact it is bound to be difficult, but as I will later explain, it is bound to be beautiful just as well. We have a free will that was handed to us through the gift that we...

Balance / is life good?

In order to make the point I'm about to make clearer, I encourage you to read through the following verses: How good life seemed, how sweet its rewards, how trivial this grudge or that grievance, how admirable friendship, and the society of one's kind, as, lighting a good cigarette one sunk among the cushions in the window seat - If by good luck there had been ash tray handy, if one had not knocked the ash out of the window in default, if things had been a little different from what they were, one would not have seen, presumably, a cat without a tail, padding softly across the quadrangle. The sight of that abrupt and truncated animal changed by some fluke of the subconscious intelligence the emotional light for me. It was as if someone had let fall a shade. Certainly, as I watched the manx cat pause in the middle of the lawn as if it too questioned the universe, something seemed lacking. Something seemed different. In these thought-provoking lines Virginia Woolf charmingly ...

the limitations of being mortal

Mankind's desire to gain knowledge and to therefore advance is one of the most important drives that led to our rule over the world. We strive for the unreachable, for what‘s beyond our limits. Whatever it is that one ponders, it remains impossible for one to figure out the true spirit of its being. We attempt it, but the truth is not revealed within this life. For to be alive means to be mortal and being mortal brings limitations. Everything human that has ever been will eventually come to an end. One day, you will die and so will your children and grandchildren and the works they‘ll do and everything they thought to be meaningful. The world is soon to perish, due to the mere stupidity, or, should I say the quintessential functioning of learning processes in humans. We only believe what we can see. Just take a look at the world with its garbage patches as big as continents, with smoke clouds cutting through the atmosphere, unhinging the natural equilibrium.  We won‘t change u...

How your dreams can change your life

We all dream every night. Sometimes, we can remember these dreams, and if you happen to wake up with a crazy dream still partly on your mind, you should write down as much as possible! When we dream, scientists think, our minds review some of the most influential of thoughts that we had over the course of the day. That way the mind 'tidies up', which helps process and evaluate information, while simultaneously preparing for the next day.  So our dreams are about what's on our minds. If you watched a movie before going to bed and realized you were revisiting your memory of the movie in your dreams, you know how stupid your dreams can be. But sometimes by writing down and later interpreting them you can learn a lot about yourself and what your mind is going through.  I'm a dreamer type of person. So maybe you can't relate to what I'm about to show you, but just hang in there and you'll see that meaning can in fact be found in your dreams. To illustrate m...

About creativity and the difference between humans and animals

Maybe humans are especially similar to god in a sense that humans are able to consciously think and that we are not bound to only do what instincts advise us to do. Or maybe our brains are just so highly evolved that the same kind of spirit that houses in every other animal‘s brain is merely amplified within humans. Humans are not special in that they can use their environment to create things. Creativity, or rather thinking creatively, is a trait that can be observed all over the animal kingdom. From capuchin monkeys beating a snake using a club (you could argue whether that's a way of thinking creatively), over other primates like orangutans using pointy items to extract the heart of palm from treetops, to the herring gull that made a habit of catching rabbits and drowning them at sea. Research has shown that first of all, creativity is a phenomenon that is not unique to humankind. Moreover, scientists found that an animal‘s creativity stands partly in relation to the size ...
